Degrees and studying

Universities of applied sciences provide:

  • teaching for a Bachelor’s degree
  • teaching for a Master’s degree
  • specialised vocational studies and other types of continuing education
  • open university of applied sciences education
  • vocational teacher training

The successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree programme gives the students a higher education degree equipping them with practical vocational skills. Studying in degree programmes is free and students can also receive financial aid.

Degree programmes are available in nine fields:

  • Humanities and education
  • Culture
  • Social sciences, business and administration
  • Natural sciences
  • Technology, communications and transport
  • Natural resources and the environment
  • Social services, health and sports
  • Military and security
  • Tourism, catering and domestic services

Progress in studies is measured using credits. A student aiming at a basic degree must collect between 210 and 270 credits. This requires studies lasting between three and four years. A Master’s degree covers between 60 and 90 credits and for a full-time student it requires studies lasting between 1 and 1.5 years.

University of applied sciences study programmes

Studies for a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree are in the form of study programmes.

The university of applied sciences study programmes must be approved by the Ministry of Education. In its decision, the Ministry must give the name of the programme, the alternatives (if necessary), the degree and its title and the extent of the study programme and the training required (as credits).

Universities of applied sciences decide on the content of the studies and the curricula.
